Food imagery is an art-form within itself. Though it is important to be technically correct as in any other type of photography, an eye for detail, an interest in food as well as the ability to comprehend the Chef’s intended vision – are all elements that help you to become a great photographer of cuisine. Though food imagery is simply one more type of product photography – and lots of similar issues arise – it is a separate category altogether. Good food photographers practice their work for many years, and many even build careers just on producing food photography. Whether used in cook books, or being produced for a renowned Chef, or for your local bakery – there is a passion needed to create good food photography. This is the passion that we hold in our hearts.

Much has been written about Food photography and the techniques involved. There are many who marvel at the various additives that are used in food photography. In fact, our belief is that if the food is made with great ingredients by a passionate person – who is a designer – there is no reason to depart from the natural look of the dish -just as it came out of the kitchen. The goal of food photography, like any other product photography, is to make it look good – to present it as the designer intended. In fact, the real goal of great food photography is to make you want to eat it – and soon. Our goal is to present finished imagery that the Chef will be proud to present.

As we mentioned above, a lot of the issues that crop up when photographing other products, also crop up when photographing food. We are concerned about the amount, type and quality of light that we are using in the composition . We are also careful to consider set and setting, just as discussed in our section where we discuss Product Photography. As with any other type of product shoot, it is imperative to seek the support of a professional food stylist, someone who can imagine both Chef and Photographer´s vision. Their primary role is to make food photogenic, applying techniques that are very specific to this art-form. Extra time, organization and communication are needed when photographing food, due to the fact that, unlike other products, food only looks as intended fora matter of minutes. Sometimes even less.
